A Closer Look
So what exactly are you getting when you buy a custom set of cornhole boards from Texas Cornhole Boards? Well the short answer is the best handmade, high quality boards that money can buy. These boards will last you for years and years and provide countless hours of fun and entertainment. Just to show you exactly what goes into every set of custom boards we build here's a step-by-step guide detailing the process from construction to delivery. After reading these steps we hope you come away feeling the sense of pride and dedication we put into every single set we build.
The building process starts with the procurement of the highest quality lumber we can find. We use 3/4" cabinet grade birch plywood for the tops and premium 1X3's for the frame. All the pieces are cut and sanded. We utilize a technique employed by furniture makers called pocket holes. A series of holes are drilled in each piece. These holes are drilled at an angle so that each screw will be hidden under the board and this technique provides the ultimate in strength. Every seam is also glued to ensure a very tight fit that will never come apart. A perfect 6" hole for the "cornhole" is drilled with a 6" hole saw. The legs are attached last and cut to ensure the regulation height of 12 inches in the back. They are now ready for puttying and sanding.
Puttying and sanding
Some builders may opt to skip this step, but we feel this very important step helps ensure all minor defects are removed and makes for a nice clean look with no visible seams or cracks. We apply wood putty all the way around the edges where the top and the sides meet. We also take the time to find any small scratches or dings and putty those areas as well. We allow the putty several hours to dry as hard as a rock. We then sand the entire board several times. We end up with a beautiful board that is very smooth, void of defects, and ready for priming.
Priming and Painting
After the boards have been sanded smooth we apply 2 coats of primer. The primer helps seal the boards as well as provide a good base for applying paint or decals. After the primer has dried we sand the entire surface to remove any bumps. This leaves us with a surface smooth as glass. We then apply the full face vinyl wrap.
To ensure your set of boards can withstand the wear and tear of playing and the elements we finish them off with several layers of polycrylic. This creates a nice shine to the boards and also protects them from the elements. We apply 3 to 4 coats of polycrylic over the entire board and the legs, and we wait an hour or longer between coats. Between the last two coats we sand the entire surface with a very fine grit sandpaper to smooth out any bubbles or imperfections. Once the poly dries for about 72 hours it sets up hard as a rock and it's ready for the last step!
Once the poly is completely dry we then attach the legs to the boards. We use lock nuts to ensure the legs don't become loose after they've been opened and shut several times. Naturally they will loosen a little over time, but a few quick turns with a wrench and your legs will be tight again. We then set the boards up to ensure they are balanced and inspect them to look for any imperfections or items that need to be touched up. Your boards are now complete and ready for the most important part playing cornhole!
As you can see great time and care is taken in every single set we build, and every step is performed by yours truly. We do not outsource any of the construction process. This way we can ensure that the boards you are receiving live up to our high standards.
